iPhone Duo Camera: What It Can and Can't Do for Creators
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, on sale from 23 October 2026 at $1,999 in the US (A$3,499 in Australia). For video, the cameras that matter are a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide on the back and a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer screen. The useful part for creators is that you can shoot selfies with the rear cameras and check the framing on the outer screen. The limit is the same as on every other iPhone: Dual Capture saves front and rear as one picture-in-picture file, and the inset cannot be moved after recording.
Disclosure: I build ContentCam, a camera app that also records two things at once, so I have an interest in this comparison. Every iPhone Duo figure below comes from Apple's own pages, linked in the sources at the end. I have not used an iPhone Duo or tested any app on one, ContentCam included.
What cameras does the iPhone Duo have?
Four, plus a 2x crop. Apple's iPhone Duo Tech Specs page lists:
| Camera | Where | Specs | Video |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48MP Fusion Main | Back | 26 mm, f/1.6, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation | 4K Dolby Vision at 24, 25, 30, 60, 100 or 120 fps |
| 12MP 2x Telephoto | Back (from the Main camera) | 52 mm, f/1.6, "optical-quality" | Uses the Main camera's sensor |
| 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide | Back | 13 mm, f/2.2, 120° field of view, macro | 4K Dolby Vision |
| 12MP Center Stage | Outer screen | f/2.2 | 4K Dolby Vision at 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps |
| FaceTime camera | Under the inner screen | f/1.8 | 1080p at 30 or 60 fps |
Apple says the Ultra Wide is "the same as on iPhone 18 Pro models". The 4K at 100 and 120 fps is on the Main camera only, and Apple's announcement pitches it as slow motion: record at 120 fps, then slow the playback down.
Can you film selfies with the iPhone Duo rear camera?
Apple says yes, and for anyone who films themselves it is the most interesting thing about the Duo. Apple's announcement says: "Users can take a selfie with the higher-resolution rear cameras and preview their shot on the outer display." A feature called Duo Preview "shows the live preview on the outer display, helping subjects pose, check their framing, and guide the shot."
On a normal iPhone, filming yourself with the rear camera means framing blind or using a mirror. On the Duo you get the 48MP Main, with sensor-shift stabilisation and 4K up to 120 fps, pointed at you, with a screen facing you. Apple's wording is about selfies and posing, so check the video modes you rely on in the Camera app before planning a shoot around it.
The outer 12MP camera records 4K at up to 60 fps, and Apple says the Center Stage front camera "can automatically take photos and videos in any orientation", so you don't have to turn the phone sideways for a landscape selfie.
Can the iPhone Duo stand up on its own?
Apple says so for two cases. Time-lapse: "users can prop iPhone Duo up without needing a tripod to easily capture longer-duration videos." And FaceTime calls, with the phone "held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls." A phone that stands by itself is a real gain for talking-head content, though Apple doesn't publish which hinge angles hold steady, so test it on your own desk before you trust it for a long take.
Does iPhone Duo have Dual Capture?
Yes. The specs page lists "Dual Capture up to 4K Dolby Vision at 30 fps" for the rear cameras, and Dual Capture for the outer front camera. It works the way it does on iPhone 17: front and rear record at the same time into one video, with your face in a window over the rear shot.
The window is set when you record. iPhone Life's guide to Dual Capture (Olena Kagui, 26 January 2026) says you can drag it to any corner "before and during the recording", but "it isn't possible to move it while you edit." Whatever corner it is in when you stop is where it stays. Which models have the feature and the rest of its limits are in which iPhones have Dual Capture.
Apple also added Duo FaceTime, which lets a second person join a call from the outer display and camera. That is for calls, not recording.
What can't the iPhone Duo camera do for creators?
- Give you two clean angles from Dual Capture. One file, inset baked in. You can't cut to the rear shot alone, resize the window, or grade your face and the scene separately.
- Give you vertical and horizontal from one take. Center Stage lets you choose the orientation without turning the phone, but nothing on Apple's specs page or in its announcement offers both shapes from one take. A second shape still means a crop, which keeps about a third of the picture. How to convert vertical video to horizontal covers the options.
- Record Dual Capture above 30 fps. The same Main camera shoots 4K at 120 fps on its own, but Dual Capture is capped at 4K30, so there is no slow motion in a two-camera clip.
- Be cheap to replace. At $1,999 to $3,199, it is a lot of phone to clamp to a tripod outdoors.
Where does a separate camera app fit on iPhone Duo?
Where you need the two cameras as two files. ContentCam runs on iPhone, and its Front & Back mode records the front and rear cameras at the same time as two separate full videos, one per camera, rather than one picture-in-picture file. You can cut between them, use either one alone, or place them side by side in your editor. Its main mode records a 9:16 and a 16:9 file from the same take.
The trade is resolution. On iPhone, third-party apps can only run two cameras at once in the formats Apple marks as multi-cam supported, which top out at 1920 × 1440 on every iPhone ContentCam has run on, so Front & Back records in HD. I haven't tested ContentCam on an iPhone Duo, so I can't tell you whether that ceiling is different on it. If the clip you record is the clip you post, Dual Capture at 4K is the better tool and it is already on the phone.
