How to Take a Selfie and Back Camera Photo at the Same Time
To take a selfie and a back camera photo from one press, use Snapchat's Dual Camera if you want one combined image, or a camera app that saves both cameras as separate photos if you want to choose the layout yourself. The iPhone's Dual Capture and Instagram's Dual are video features, so with those you record a couple of seconds and screenshot the best frame.
Disclosure: I build ContentCam, which is one of the apps below. Every claim here is tied to Apple's, Snapchat's, Meta's or Android's own documentation, listed at the end. If you want a video rather than a photo, the main front and back camera guide covers that.
Can the iPhone Camera app take a front and back photo at the same time?
Not as a photo. Apple's iPhone User Guide places Dual Capture in the Camera app's Video mode: open Camera, choose Video, tap the camera-controls button, then tap Dual Capture. Apple describes it as recording "yourself" and "the action in front of you" at once, and lists six models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple's guide describes it only as a video feature.
The workaround on those six iPhones is to record two or three seconds of Dual Capture, pause playback on the best moment and take a screenshot. The still has the selfie window fixed in the top-left corner, because Dual Capture paints the front camera into one frame. Dual Capture's limits are covered separately.
What is the easiest free way to take a selfie and a back camera photo at once?
Snapchat's Dual Camera. Snapchat's help centre says Dual Camera "allows you to capture content using the front and back cameras at the same time". In the Snapchat Camera, tap the Dual Camera icon in the toolbar, try the layouts and take a Snap. Snapchat lists it for iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later, and its help centre says the Android version is coming "soon".
The result is one image with both cameras in it. That suits a quick Story. It does not suit anything you want to edit later, because the selfie window is part of the pixels and you cannot move it, resize it or take it out.
Can Instagram take a front and back photo?
Instagram's Dual is a recording feature. Meta announced it on 21 July 2022, in a Reels update, as a way to "record using your phone's front and back cameras simultaneously" in the Instagram camera. The same workaround applies: record a short Dual clip, pause on the best moment and take a screenshot.
How do you get the selfie and the back camera photo as two separate files?
Use a camera app that writes each camera to its own file. In ContentCam this is photo mode inside Front & Back mode, and it works on iPhone and Android:
- Open ContentCam and switch the recording mode to Front & Back.
- Choose whether the rear camera shoots vertical or horizontal. The selfie camera is always vertical.
- Frame the rear shot and press the shutter button beside the record button.
- One press captures both cameras together and saves two photos: one from the rear camera and one from the selfie camera.
Because the two photos are separate, the layout is your decision afterwards. Put the selfie in any corner, set the two side by side, stack them, or post them as two slides of a carousel. The rear photo also stands on its own with no face covering part of it, which a combined image can never give you.
Two honest limits. Photo mode is a premium feature in ContentCam, with no free photos, although the app itself and its dual-format video are free. And the phone has to support running both cameras at once, which is the next question.
Why can't my phone take a front and back photo at the same time?
The phone's hardware has to run the front and rear cameras together, and the phone has to tell apps that it can. On iPhone, apps have been able to run more than one camera since iOS 13 through AVCaptureMultiCamSession, and they check isMultiCamSupported to see if the iPhone can. On Android 11 (API level 30) and later, apps call getConcurrentCameraIds(), which returns the sets of cameras the phone can run at the same time. If a phone reports no front and rear pair, no app can capture both cameras through the official route, however good the app is.
This is why a front and back photo works on one phone and not on another that looks just as capable.
Which method should you use?
- A quick photo for a Story or a friend: Snapchat's Dual Camera. Free, one tap, one finished image.
- You have an iPhone 17, iPhone Air or iPhone 18 Pro and no Snapchat: a short Dual Capture video and a screenshot of the best frame.
- A carousel, a thumbnail or anything you will edit: two separate photos, so the rear shot stays clean and the selfie goes wherever you want it.
How do you make a front and back photo look good?
- Light your face first. The selfie camera has a smaller sensor than the main rear camera and gets noisy sooner in a dim room. Face a window or a lamp.
- Hold still for a beat. Both cameras capture on one press, so a moving hand blurs both photos at once.
- Leave room for the selfie. If you will combine the two photos, frame the rear shot with a corner that has nothing important in it.
- Mind the exposure gap. A bright sky behind the rear shot and a shaded face in the selfie will never both look right in one combined image. Two separate files let you brighten the selfie without touching the sky.
