How to Hold Your Phone Steady While Filming
Every page that ranks for this is written by someone selling a grip or a gimbal. I am not selling either, so here is the honest order: technique first, then bracing, then the stabilisation already in your phone, and gear last. Most shaky footage is fixed before you spend anything.
How should you actually hold the phone?
Two hands, elbows pinned to your ribs, and breathe out as you record.
The single most common cause of shake is holding a phone at arm's length in one hand. Extended arms have no support and every small muscle tremor is amplified by the distance. Pulling your elbows into your sides turns your torso into the tripod.
Three refinements that cost nothing:
- Grip the phone by its edges with both hands, thumbs behind, rather than pinching one corner.
- Exhale slowly while filming. Holding your breath builds tension that shows up as a tremor after a few seconds.
- Keep the phone close to your body. A phone held 30cm from your chest is dramatically steadier than one at full arm's reach.
What should you brace against?
Anything solid. A doorframe, a wall, a table edge, a car roof, your own knee.
Bracing beats technique, and technique beats gear. Lean your shoulder into a wall, rest your elbows on a table, or sit down and plant both elbows on your knees. For a low shot, put the phone on the ground against a bag. For a static shot of any length, find a surface and stop holding it altogether.
If you must stand unsupported, widen your stance to shoulder width and put one foot slightly forward. It sounds trivial and it measurably reduces sway.
How do you walk without the footage bouncing?
Bend your knees, roll heel to toe, and turn with your whole body.
Walking shake is vertical bounce from your heels striking the ground. Softening the knees absorbs it, which is why the exaggerated crouched walk looks silly and works. Take shorter steps than feels natural, land heel first and roll forward, and keep the phone close to your chest rather than out front.
For turns, do not swivel your wrists. Move your feet and let your whole upper body rotate as one unit. Wrist-led pans are where the jerky footage comes from.
Should you use the phone's stabilisation?
Usually yes, but understand what it costs.
Software stabilisation works by cropping into the frame and moving that window around to cancel movement. So it costs you field of view, and the more aggressive the mode, the larger the crop. That matters if you are already framing tight, and it matters a lot if the footage has to survive a further crop to another aspect ratio.
The other cost is warping. Aggressive stabilisation on a wide lens can bend straight lines near the edges as the software corrects, most visible on doorframes and horizons. If you see that, turn the mode down a step.
One thing stabilisation cannot fix: a shutter speed that is too slow. Motion blur inside a single frame is baked in, and no stabiliser removes it. This is why handheld low-light footage often looks soft and smeared even with stabilisation on.
When is a gimbal actually worth it?
When you are moving through a space and the movement itself is the shot.
A gimbal earns its cost for walking shots, follow shots, orbits and reveals. It does very little for a static talking-head shot, which a table and a stand solve for a fraction of the price.
Be honest about the overheads before buying one: charging, balancing it whenever you change a lens or add a mic, carrying it, and the setup time when you actually wanted to catch something in the next ten seconds. Plenty of gimbals get bought for shots the owner films twice a year.
The cheaper things that solve more shots: a small tripod, a clamp, and a phone grip with a cold shoe so you can mount a microphone without holding everything at once.
What does the checklist look like?
- Both hands, elbows tucked in, phone close to the body
- Brace against something solid whenever one is available
- Shutter at 180 degrees, not slower, or shake becomes blur
- Bent knees and short steps if you are walking
- Stabilisation on, one step below maximum, and check the edges for warping
- Avoid digital zoom, which magnifies every tremor along with the image
