How to Film Video in Low Light on Your Phone

Search for low light phone tips and you will get photography advice. It will not work, and the reason is specific. A photo can hold the shutter open for a quarter of a second. Video at 30fps cannot go slower than 1/30th, and should be at 1/60th. You cannot buy light with time. That one constraint changes everything about shooting video in the dark.

Why does photography advice not work for video?

Because every low light photography trick depends on a long exposure, and video has no long exposure available.

Night mode on a phone works by stacking several seconds of exposure into one image. Handheld long exposure, tripod shots, light painting, all of it buys light with time. Video cannot. Each frame has to be finished before the next one starts, so at 30fps your absolute ceiling is 1/30th of a second per frame, and shooting there gives you smeared, stuttery motion.

The 180 degree rule puts you at half your frame rate, so 1/60th at 30fps. That is your real budget, and it is roughly fifteen times less light than the quarter-second a photo can use.

What can you actually change in the dark?

Four things, and only one of them is free of a cost.

Which lens should you use in low light?

The main lens. Never the ultra-wide, never the telephoto, and never digital zoom.

Phone makers put the largest sensor and the widest aperture behind the main camera. The ultra-wide and telephoto modules are physically smaller with narrower apertures, so in the dark they gather substantially less light and the phone compensates by pushing ISO, which is why night footage from an ultra-wide looks so much noisier.

Digital zoom is worse again. It is a crop, so you are throwing away the pixels you need most and then enlarging the noise that remains. In low light, move your feet instead.

Should you drop to 24fps?

Yes, if the look suits the piece.

Frame rate and light are directly traded. At 60fps each frame gets at most 1/120th of a second at a 180 degree shutter. At 30fps it is 1/60th. At 24fps it is 1/48th. Going from 60 to 24 is roughly two and a half times more light per frame, at no cost in noise.

The cost is motion. 24fps has a more filmic cadence but judders on fast pans, so keep the camera slower and steadier than you would in daylight.

How high can you push ISO?

Until you can see grain crawling in the shadows on a full-size screen, then back off one step.

Phone sensors are small, so noise arrives early. Judge it on a laptop or a television, not on the phone screen where everything looks acceptable. And judge it in the darkest part of the frame, because that is where noise shows first.

If you have pushed ISO high enough to see noise and the shot is still dark, the answer is more light, not more gain.

What about Night mode?

It does not apply. Night mode is a stills feature built on multi-second exposure stacking, and it is unavailable while recording video for the reason above.

Some phones apply their own low light video processing, which is noise reduction rather than extra exposure. It helps a little and it softens detail. It is not the same thing.

What does a workable low light setup look like?

Common questions

Why is my phone video so grainy at night? ISO is high because the shutter cannot open longer than your frame rate allows. Add light, lower the frame rate, or accept the noise.

Does Night mode work for video? No. It is a stills feature that relies on exposures far longer than a single video frame.

Is 24fps better in low light? Yes, each frame receives more light than at 30 or 60fps. The trade is judder on fast movement.

Should I use the ultra-wide at night? No. It has a smaller sensor and narrower aperture than the main lens, so it forces ISO higher.

Does zooming make low light worse? Digital zoom does, because it crops away the pixels and enlarges the noise. Optical telephoto is also usually darker than the main lens.
