24fps vs 30fps vs 60fps: Which Should You Shoot for Social Media?
Shoot 30fps for almost everything you post. Shoot 24fps when you want it to feel filmic. Shoot 60fps only when you intend to slow it down. That is the whole answer, and the rest of this explains why, because the guides that rank for this question mostly do not mention TikTok, Reels or Shorts at all.
What does frame rate actually change?
How motion reads, and how much light each frame receives. Nothing else.
Frame rate is how many still images per second make up the video. Higher numbers capture motion in finer slices, which looks smoother and less like cinema. Lower numbers give each frame more time, which means more light and a more filmic cadence.
Frame rate does not affect sharpness, resolution or colour. People often shoot 60fps believing it is "higher quality." It is more frames, which is a different thing.
Which frame rate for which platform?
The platforms matter less than people think, because every one of them re-encodes what you upload. Shooting 60fps does not guarantee 60fps delivery to a viewer on a poor connection.

Why does 60fps look cheap at full speed?
Because a century of film trained everyone to read 24fps as cinema and high frame rates as live television.
The effect has a name, the soap opera effect, and it is why high-frame-rate footage played at normal speed can feel like a daytime drama or a home video. It is not a defect. It is an association, and it is strong enough that shooting everything at 60fps makes polished work look less polished.
Shoot 60 when you plan to slow it down. Played at half speed on a 30fps timeline, those extra frames become smooth slow motion instead of an odd cadence.
How does slow motion maths work?
Divide your capture rate by your timeline rate.
- 60fps on a 30fps timeline gives you half speed, smooth.
- 120fps on a 30fps timeline gives you quarter speed.
- 240fps on a 30fps timeline gives you one eighth speed, and usually costs resolution.
Shooting 60fps and playing it at 60fps buys you nothing but a different look and half the light. The frames only pay off when you spend them on time.
What is the light cost?
Direct and significant, which matters indoors and at night.
With a 180 degree shutter, each frame at 24fps gets 1/48th of a second. At 30fps it is 1/60th. At 60fps it is 1/120th. Going from 24fps to 60fps is roughly two and a half stops less light per frame, which the camera makes up by raising ISO, which adds noise.
So in a dark room, dropping from 60fps to 30fps is one of the cheapest quality improvements available, and it costs nothing.
What about flicker under artificial light?
Match your shutter to the local mains frequency, not your frame rate.
Mains power runs at 50Hz in Australia, the UK and most of Europe, and 60Hz in the US. Some LED and fluorescent fittings pulse at that rate, and if your shutter is out of step you get rolling bands across the image.
If you see banding, set shutter to a multiple of the mains frequency: 1/50 or 1/100 on 50Hz, 1/60 or 1/120 on 60Hz. This is also why 25fps is worth knowing about in Australia, since 1/50 sits naturally at a 180 degree shutter.
Can you mix frame rates in one edit?
Yes, as long as you pick one timeline rate and conform everything to it.
Set the timeline to your delivery rate, usually 30fps for social. Drop 60fps clips in and slow them to 50%. Dropping 24fps clips onto a 30fps timeline works but can introduce slight stutter, so if you are shooting a mix, prefer 30 and 60 over 24 and 60.
