Which Phone Teleprompter App Should You Use in 2026?

Disclosure first: ContentCam has a built-in teleprompter, so I compete with every app on this page. Because of that, every claim below about somebody else's app is read from their own App Store listing, on 21 September 2026, and I have included the parts that do not flatter me. ContentCam's teleprompter is iPhone only, which rules it out for a lot of people reading this.

Search "teleprompter" in the App Store and the first six results include three apps from the same publisher with almost the same name. That is the actual problem with this category. It is not that the apps are bad, it is that they are deliberately hard to tell apart, two of the most-reviewed ones have not been updated in years, and the annual price ranges from $29.99 to $159.99 for software that scrolls text over a camera view.

What do the main phone teleprompter apps cost in 2026?

Why do so many of these apps have the same name?

Because one publisher owns three of them. Teleprompter Apps Ltd publishes "Teleprompter", "Teleprompter Pro" and "Video Teleprompter". All three rank for the same search. Two are current, and Video Teleprompter has not shipped an update since 16 July 2022, which is over four years ago, while still holding 4.8 stars from 6,549 ratings.

Belleau Technologies does something similar with PromptSmart Pro, PromptSmart Lite and PromptSmart+. PromptSmart Lite was last updated 3 August 2023.

This matters for one practical reason: an abandoned app keeps its old rating forever. Star ratings accumulate, they do not expire. So the abandoned listings look exactly as trustworthy as the maintained ones in a search result, and the only signal that separates them is the update date, which sits well down the product page where nobody scrolls.

Are the star ratings useful for choosing between them?

No. Every app in the table above sits between 4.6 and 4.9. A spread of 0.3 stars across a whole category tells you nothing, and it includes two apps nobody has touched in years. Use the update date and the price instead.

Why is BIGVU 1.6 GB?

Because BIGVU is not really a teleprompter app. It is a video production suite with a teleprompter in it: captions, branding, AI features, cloud storage. The 1.6 GB download is 21 times the size of "Teleprompter" at 76.9 MB, and the pricing matches the ambition at $24.99 a month for Starter and $139.99 a year for Pro.

That is a fair trade if you want the suite. If you want scrolling text over a camera, you are paying for and storing a great deal of software you will not open. It also requires iOS 16.6 or later, the highest minimum in the category.

Is there a phone teleprompter you can buy once?

One, in the main group: PromptSmart Pro at $29.99 as a single purchase. Everything else on this list is a subscription. PromptSmart's distinguishing feature is voice tracking, where the script follows your speech rather than scrolling at a fixed rate, which is genuinely the right idea for anyone who does not speak at a metronome pace.

The caution is the same one that applies across the category: the Pro app was updated 3 June 2026, but the free Lite version has sat untouched since August 2023, so try before the $29.99 and check the Pro build behaves on your phone.

What is the real problem with a separate teleprompter app?

It is not the camera. This is the structural issue and it applies to every app in the table.

A teleprompter app has to either film through its own camera implementation, which is almost never as good as the one in a dedicated camera app, or you run two apps and screen record, which costs you quality again. And none of them hand you more than one framing from the take, so filming a vertical for TikTok and a widescreen for YouTube means reading the script twice.

Where the separate app genuinely wins: a reflector rig. If you use a beam-splitter teleprompter, you need mirror mode and a big, dumb, full-screen scroll, and the dedicated apps do that well.

Where does ContentCam fit, honestly?

ContentCam puts the teleprompter inside the camera, so the script scrolls over the live view while it records vertical and horizontal at once. You adjust scroll speed, text size, text colour (8 of them), which of the top three lines the reading position sits on, and mirror mode for reflector rigs. The script is an overlay, so the recorded files are clean.

The honest limits, and they are real:

• iPhone only. The teleprompter is not on Android yet. If you are on a Galaxy or a Pixel, this post's table is your list, not ContentCam.
• No voice tracking. It scrolls at the speed you set. PromptSmart's speech-following is a better idea and ContentCam does not do it.
• Not a production suite. No captions, no cloud, no branding. BIGVU does those and ContentCam does not.

What it does have that none of the others do is the second framing. If the reason you are reading a script is to post the same take to two platforms, that is the part that saves you the second read.

What is the cheapest way to use a teleprompter on a phone? Notes app in large text, propped next to the lens. It costs nothing and it works. Paid apps buy you hands-free scrolling and mirror mode, not the ability to read.
